how to sew a top stitched seam

This is simple yet effective stitch, useful for adding decoration and extra strength when needed.

Steps to sew top-stitched seam

  1. Place fabric right sides together and sew 1.5cm (5/8”) in from the edge.
  2. Press the seam open then finish raw edges in preferred way.
  3. Then press the seam to one side.
  4. Working on the right side of the fabric sew through the pressed seam allowance a second row of stitching 2mm (1/8”) away from the first row.

Notes:

If the seam is horizontal then press in a downwards direction and if the seam is vertical, then press to the back of the body.

By using a contrasting or complimentary colour thread this seam can be used for decoration.

The seam allowance used here is the standard if needed adjust to suit.
